Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a young girl her father was a carnival barker which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to support her family. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in school. In the midst of only two years in school she left for an acting career. The path she chose was filled with problems. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to get work for stage. She then worked as the hat checker in the nightclub before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. She earned money by working during the day in the ushering department. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
